BRINGING THE FUNK BACK TO DANCE MUSIC

ABOUT

Seeing themselves primarily as a live band, Julian and Robin of „gome“ add that raw energy to their sets that House enthusiasts have missed for far too long. With an all-hardware /no-computer setup, their sound would best be described as honest and rough 90s House, infused with elements of Funk, Disco and Soul.

Deliberately moving away from clean computerized music, the two musicians are not afraid to pull out their instruments and play live in front of a club audience. It is this instant connection and uniqueness that regularly fills dancefloors in top destinations worldwide, like Mexico City, Berlin, Tbilisi, London, Milan or Rome, just to name a recent few.

Having formed only one year before the pandemic, they used the quiet lockdown days to perfect their live set and prepare for what’s happening now: non-stop gigs in some of the world’s most prestigious venues and constant releases.

After only 3 years, they have gathered unprecedented backing in Germany and beyond: their debut EP under their old alias volker.live appeared on RSS Disco’s Mireia Records and features remixes of Erobique and Lehult Crew’s Lucky Charmz, with strong support by Tensnake, Session Victim and Nick Höppner just to name a few. Since then, they have released two EPs on the hyped Toy Tonics imprint, both of which have received incredibly good feedback from the likes of Laurent Garnier („FEVER is an absolute bomb!!!!“), A-Trak, Ame, Black Madonna, Massimiliano Pagliara, Mousse T. and Mano Le Tough.

For nearly two years now „gome“ are working with Hamburg’s skateboard and lifestyle brand Cleptomanicx and collaborate with Carhartt WIP on various occasions. Gome also perform as a DJ Duo.

Germany is not known for soul music but some of the hottest disco artists of the 1970ies and 80ies were based in Germany. To be more precise in Munich. Donna Summer, Moroder, Faltermeyer, Boney M or Silver Convention who created the „string disco sound“ came from Munich’s wild disco scene in the 1970ies. And that’s the vibe you get with the new GOME guys. The young guys originally come from Munich. They have the Munich disco DNA. Which means: They feel the funk, they know about soul music and good basslines, they know how to groove (not to bang) and they have that slight sense of irony and easiness you need to make good disco music.
GOME are a live act. Their disco is played on several drummachines, keyboards, sequencers and microphone. Their first EP got massive props from the likes of Laurent Garnier („Love love love for this EP“) and other more funk oriented house DJs.
The new one goes further. It’s 80ies disco. The first track „Teach you“ was produced in the raw style of early Prince or the legendary Sexual Harrassment. A pumping bassline, driving 808 beats and funky rap vocals is the only thing you need. Erobique, King of German disco and member of the band International Pony (DJ Koze & Cosmic DJ) did a stripped down remix showing that less is more.

New artists on Toy Tonics! Gome are an organic disco duo from Hamburg. Two guys that make good mood disco inspired by the 1980 Italo and Munich Disco vibe and share an addiction to gourmet food. Positive vibes, rolling grooves, catchy melodic bits and vocals and a lot of musicality.
The guys come from Hamburg where they keep strong connections to the other Hamburg disco artists (Erobique, Session Victim..) as well as to Germany’s leading skate crews Cleptomanicx and Lobby.
For one track of the EP they invited one of Germany’s most interesting underground rap artists to do a german hip house tune: Tightill. Funkiest guy from Germany on a mic.
Gome add a raw energy to the currently growing house vibe. A live energy that real house music enthusiasts might have missed far too long. With an all-hardware / no-computer setup, their sound would best be described as honest and rough Live-House and Disco-Funk. Infused with elements of soul, boogie and synth-wave.

Dobro-Opprefish-RMX

Following up releases by DJ Merci, Will Sonic and Sun Rhythms, St. Petersburg-based label Dobro returns with this brilliant EP by Opprefish. After having studied music theory for more than 10 years, practicing saxophone and guitar, the young Parisian decided to produce electronic music which resulted in releases on Rewind Ltd, Fantin Zoo and InFine over the years. The Rhodes Kheys EP features the chilled soul-jazz beats of „CHURN Mitigaschoen“, while the title track gets a neon-lit nu-disco makeover by gome, plus two dusty, late-night deep house excursions in collaboration with DJ Gravlax.

It’s Italian time! Sam Ruffillo is back. Sicilian producer doing smooth Balearic disco with Italian vocals. The direction is clear: Sam Ruffillo’s music brings us back into the Italian riviera and the hippy days of Ibiza in the late 1970ies. Even his way of production is similar to how the early days disco producers in Italia used to work: No samples needed. Instead a few guest musicians come to jam over Sam’s beats in his Italian studio space. Guitar, bass, percussions. Sam later makes the production and added keyboard solos and put together the vibes into what is this new EP.
The girl voice comes from NINFA. It’s the classic studio story: Ninfa is a singer and DJ and friend of Sam. She was hanging at the studio while Sam was finishing these tracks. She stated to sing along… the words came up spontaneously… so they decided to record her and finally decided to keep them. The vibe was too good. Why talk English if u can do it better: in Italian! 🙂
This is second for Toy Tonics after his Sport House EP from last year. Sam also appeared on the solo record of Joel Holmes on Toy Tonics. Together with Kapote Modica he co-produced and made the beats on that record. Now Sam is back with this pure Italian EP. Inclusive remixes by new German artists Gome and Italian Musemeci – known to many from his fabulous Italo-trance releases on Diynamic records.

Three groove grandmasters take us on a ride down the backroads of the Odyssey that started recently with the same-named debut album of Holly North. Following their very own approach, each of them opens an entirely new chapter of this epic piece of dance music. Underher discovered a veritable source of beauty in the depths of the melancholy that resonates from the vocal of Far Away and channels it into his melodic dance sound. Arutani makes the title Epilogue sound like a sunrise watched from the edge of a wood, with wafting layers of morning mist and glistening pearls of dew in your eyes and the solid boom of an open air sound system in your back. Finally, Gome’s Late Summer remix is heavily infused with the subtropical vibes of a certain Atlantic island, its playful funkiness and remarkably driving lounginess reminding us that it’s time to kick off our flip flops at the poolside and to finally grab a first cocktail.

volker.live’s debut and final release “My Love Will Set You Free”
Final release? We see the question mark popping up over your head. Well yes, these four tracks are a time capsule, a historic cache which takes you back to one hot summer of 2019. When this care-free boy band formed and made it their goal to climb up the world’s stages to play an all-hardware live set & have f.u.n. while doing so. This endeavor went swimmingly. Festival gigs were pocketed and crowds intrigued. The stand-out track of their gigs was always “My Love Will Set You Free”, an acid-house stomper with uplifting, yet melancholic vocals from their friend ÆN.
Friends and neighbors were quick to re-interpret the song and the idea of a record took shape.
Lehult’s Lucky Charmz propels the listener into the void by upping the acidity. Closing in on a playtime of 10 minutes, we’re readily giving up our sense for time and space. Whirring drum hits meet feedbacking tape delay while riding the rock solid bass line.
Erobique liked the song so much, he quickly drew up two versions of his own. His “Disko Mix” oozes that saccharine, danceable magic mélange of days past. Warm keys, hand claps, and Aen’s intimate voice are stirred into an exquisite cocktail. You know that Carsten Meyer would never forget the umbrella on top. He’ll keep the cherry though. The “Black Velvet Mix” closes the curtains for a slow dance. This is personal, it’s just between you and the song. Sub rosa.
In the meantime, Volker.live decided to follow separate paths of their adventure, but everyone agreed to release these songs into the world. May they serve as a reminder of what can be created out of care-free energy that’s driven by a deep connection to music. ⅔ of volker.live are now known as gome.
